Nomination round for KIVI NIRIA-South prize at Fontys University of Applied Sciences Eindhoven
In the preparation round to the KIVI NIRIA-Zuid prize, the Integrated Product Development programme symposium at Fontys was again an exciting and lively meeting with the students at this University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven.
Participation in the preparation of these project presentations was initiated several years ago by the Department of Electrical Engineering-South and later became an activity in which Region South and the Department of Mechanical Engineering-South also participate. To underscore the interest in the students' achievements, last year's prize was established, which will be awarded every year to the student team with the most outstanding performance.
As KIVI NIRIA, we want to encourage students to participate in the multidisciplinary projects in which different disciplines have to arrive at a joint result.
The presentations by the students of their execution of multidisciplinary projects was again surprising. Varying projects from conveyor belt steering to reassuring patients in medical environments with scents. It was again difficult to nominate a team from the six excellent presentations for the award.
To encourage the students to also view their projects in the broader perspective of different markets, this time we have found Émile Chappin, a KIVI NIRIA member and researcher at TU Delft, willing to serve as keynote speaker to highlight how developments in complex environments call for different approaches.
You can see his presentation here.

Preliminary round for the KIVI NIRIA Zuid prize at the IPD symposium at Fontys Hogeschool Eindhoven
The Integrated Product Development (IPD) symposium is the meeting at Fontys Hogeschool Eindhoven where students present their papers. Students choose an assignment at the beginning of their 4th year and form a group with fellow students from different disciplines required for the topic to carry out the assignment. Each semester, a number of groups complete their assignment. In January each school year is the first symposium at which, this year, nine groups presented their performances.
KIVI NIRIA participates in this study programme with the contribution from the Electro-South department in following the programme and contributions from Electro and Mechanical Engineering in judging the groups nominated by the institution as best school performances. From these nominated groups, the jury will select the winner of the KIVINIRIA South prize in the final symposium of the school year in July. The prize, a trophy and KN membership for all group members, is made possible by contributions from Electro South and Region South. The contribution in the organisation of the symposia from Region South is the nomination of the Key note speaker, a KN member who explains the practical aspects of product development and the role of the engineer in it in a presentation as the opening of each symposium.
At the meeting on 30 January, 23 KIVI NIRIA members were present as audience members to show evidence of interest.
The key note speaker was Dr Ir. Antoine Schmeitz, Senior Research Scientist and Technical Leader Tyre Modelling Department of the Integrated Vehicle Safety TNO Transport and Mobility at Helmond. In an engaging speech, he explained the position of the developer between science objectives and the needs of companies in adapting products to market demand using company examples in tyre development. The presentation can be found here. The TNO video he showed as an illustration can be found here.
The programme we followed can of course be revisited on the activity pages on 30 January 2013, you can see the page here.
Below is a photo compilation of the products developed by the students in their assignments.

Description
Fontys University of Applied Sciences works closely with the business community. Third- and fourth-year students of Fontys University of Applied Sciences Engineering and Applied Science carry out projects for the high-tech sector in the Brainport region of Eindhoven in a multidisciplinary setting. For one semester, students work as real engineers on authentic projects , communicate with contacts in the business sector, work closely together in teams and develop, design and make products. These products but perhaps much more importantly the process these students went through to arrive at a solution will be presented at the IPD symposium.
A critical jury will assess the presentations, reports and products. KIVI NIRIA Region South will provide the judges to assess which project group wins the KIVI NIRIA Award.
We hope to welcome you on Wednesday 4 July 2012 at 12:15 and wish you a pleasant afternoon in advance. For ALV members, it is of course also possible to join KNHOT's ALV at 18:15
