High-end audio
Description
Already about 30 years ago, audiophiles and scientists parted ways. Audiophiles see scientists as lost souls trying to measure audio, and probably doing it the wrong way, while trying to push the last bits out of the latest compression method. Scientists see audiophiles as woolly-sock types, who enthusiastically stick paper-in-oil capacitors in tube amps and confidently claim, without any scientific backing, that that sounds much nicer, while in A/B tests they cannot distinguish MP3 from PCM.
Where did they go wrong? Why is virtually no audio magazine measuring any more? What are the secrets of tube amplifiers? Why are so many new amplifiers being sold that on paper perform less than their predecessors? Why is it that old-fashioned record players fetch more on the second-hand market than super audio CD players?
In this lecture, Willem van der Brug of high-end audio company Array (www.arrayaudio.nl) tries to give a hint. And yes, THD, IMD and SNR are even discussed. Visitors be warned: not everything is scientifically based.
