Kick-off meeting Energy - footprint
Description
The European Commission is demanding emission reductions of CO2 to 20% of 1996 levels by 2050. Never, however, has a plan been drawn up on how and who should achieve that reduction. CBS figures show Dutch energy - mass balance. Translated into a footprint, it shows which producers and users use energy and how much CO2 emissions that causes. From this starting point, we look at what the 2050 standard requires for interventions and for whom this has consequences.
Vice president of KIVI NIRIA, Joost Wentink opens this meeting with the presentation and explanation of the footprint. The import, export and production of energy carriers oil, gas and coal. The use of nuclear energy. The still minimal use of sustainable and renewable energy. Quantified by energy content (Joules) for all use of the Netherlands, this is 3330 Peta joules annually, leading to 220 Megatonnes of CO2/fine dust emissions.
Prof Dr Coby van der Linde, director of the CIEP discusses the pathways that can lead to CO2 reduction. She considers for each group of users where it is possible to save energy, replace it with sustainable and renewable energy and how we can minimise the use of fossil hydrocarbons. It indicates the reality value for the Netherlands in a European and wider context. The position of refineries, the fossil hydrocarbons used in products such as steel, fertilisers and plastics partly determine our competitive position and prosperity. The risks in switching to new energy carriers and technologies. In this interpretation of bottlenecks and opportunities, there is ample room for input from the participants in this meeting.
Finally, we place the findings in the footprint for 2050. The question of how such savings can be achieved technically and economically and whether this will lead to the set standards for 2050 will form the input for five follow-up meetings in 2013/2014 for each form of generation and consumer group
