Description

In the delta, space is scarce. To keep living and working here affordably, that space must be used efficiently. The 4D system has been developed to combine multiple functions on the surface or facades of buildings. Where the surface was previously unused, the added value is that it will now be used continuously through multifunctional application.

The InnoSportLab opened the world's first so-called 4D sports field in Eindhoven on 14 May 2014. The new sports field can be used for various applications. This is because the surface consists of a kind of lamellae, which can be rotated so that a different side lies on top each time. A grass pitch, for example, but it can also become another sports surface, or even transform into solar panels. This way, energy is generated at times when there is no sport.

The development of the new sports field has taken two years. The idea is that the new sports field is not only sustainable but can also generate income by, for example, selling the generated energy.

Besides the 4D sports field, Cablean also developed the 4D facade. With the 4D system, any surface can be made profitable. By combining functions such as energy generation, air purification and rainwater capture. Surfaces that reduce heat stress, produce food or display advertising are also possible. In this way, facades, roofs and even football pitches can be made useful 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There are around 2.6 billion square metres of built-up surface in the Netherlands that can be given an additional function in this way.
