Dutch Lithography Museum Valkenswaard
A successful formula that Region South is sure to build on. An afternoon excursion in interesting surroundings and with interesting presentations provided time and opportunity for the 30 participants to get to know each other better and to network.
The Dutch Lithography Museum, together with museums for lost local industry and the local history circle, is housed in a monument, the former religious nursing home from 1910, which has been tastefully restored for its new function. The spacious reception hall lent itself perfectly to the meeting, which started with mutual acquaintance over coffee and Brabant flan.
In his presentation, ir. Peter Louis Vrijdag was able to link lithography and modern etching techniques for chip manufacturing like no other. In a fascinating film, he explained the development of lithography step by step and then used his background as a chemist to illustrate the links to the chip. His enthusiasm for the museum as co-founder and former director of Vrijdag's Printing Works ensured a very comprehensive tour in which Frank van Ootmerssen, the museum's director and a number of volunteers went into all aspects of lithography in depth, including demonstrating a lithograph. Information about the lithography museum can be found at www.steendrukmuseum.nl.
Back together in the reception hall, after catching up over a snack and a drink, the presentations by Henk Vrielink and Paul Dielissen followed. They explained PUM Netherlands senior experts, a non-profit organisation that advises companies from developing countries and emerging markets that cannot afford commercial consultancy. Experienced engineers, still working or recently retired who want to be sent out for a few months to serve their knowledge in developing countries can apply to PUM. There was clear interest in this, especially after the practical case Paul Dielissen put forward. Information about the PUM on the site www.pum.nl.
The programme we followed can of course be seen again on the activities page on 6 September 2012, you can see the page here.

Description
Stone printing or lithography brought the world a technique for printing images quickly, massively and inexpensively in 1798. From 1834, also in colour.
In this unique Museum, visitors will find an extensive collection of imagery and technique. Both the historical, technical and artistic sides of lithography are discussed in detail.
You can see and experience the phenomenal invention, the development and the enormous field of application for yourself.
The speaker/tour guide is Peter-Louis Vrijdag, 1938, chemistry TU/e (1965). Peter-Louis Vrijdag was managing director of the Vrijdag family business from 1973 and was so impressed by the skills of the early lithographers and litho printers that he amassed an impressive collection over the past 25 years. This resulted in the opening of the NSM in 2001. Especially interesting
as the development from lithography to chip manufacturing is explained in the presentation.
The tour of the museum is followed by a brief explanation of the 'PUM Netherlands senior experts'. A non-profit organisation that advises companies from developing countries and emerging markets that cannot afford commercial consultancy. They do this by matching these companies, at their request, with Dutch professionals who use their years of experience unpaid for a better world. In this way, they encourage small and medium-sized enterprises locally. The PUM speakers will remain available for further explanation at the conclusion.
