Tomorrow's technology invented yesterday
Description
Applying for a patent is full of pitfalls but protection is a dire necessity!
Alfons Laudy, account manager at Octrooicentrum Nederland, shows that patents are a wonderful source of information.
Patents allow you to protect something. Everyone knows that. But that a patent is also a source of information turns out to be less well known. Using examples, Alfons Laudy shows that patents can provide a glimpse into the future.
An introduction to this source of information does not have to be via specialists. Free patent databases can be accessed on the internet, allowing anyone to become acquainted with patents. The protection offered by a granted patent is a reward for publishing the invention described. Such publication is also necessary, to show everyone what technology can (not) be freely applied. To facilitate familiarisation with this information, Octrooicentrum Nederland, in addition to its legal task of granting patents, provides information on how to search for and use patent information.
It also discusses how to apply for a patent abroad. Since the Netherlands is only a small country and exports a lot, it is important to know how to extend protection abroad.
The Patent Act is only one law of a number that regulates intellectual property. The lecture provides a clear overview of these different property rights (such as trademark and copyright), making it clear which aspects of products can receive the most effective protection.
The lecture will use an interactive connection to the internet with the aim of showing that a lot of information is available to everyone.
