Traffic centre NL and Hoog Catharijne
Description
A day excursion to the historic junction of motorways and railways Utrecht, starting with a visit to the Verkeerscentrum Nederland (VCNL) and, after lunch, a visit to the Stationsgebied containing Hoog Catharijne.
The VCNL, together with the 5 regional traffic centres of Rijkswaterstaat (Utrecht, Rhoon, Velsen, Wolfheze and Helmond), ensures safe and smooth traffic flow on the Dutch main road network 24 hours a day. The VCNL has the overview of disruptions in the road network and initiates and coordinates measures. The regional traffic centres each control part of the motorway network, such as opening rush-hour lanes and setting diversion routes in case of accidents via signs above the road.
In addition to the road network, the railways also require good traffic flow for both train traffic and passengers. To this end, the hub for the Netherlands in Utrecht is being adapted in the railway complex, platforms, station and the wider area centred on Hoog Catharijne. Hoog Catharijne a well-functioning but dated shopping area that is currently being renovated making it brighter and more spacious, providing a better connection between the growing city and the station and providing sufficient shopping facilities. The tour of the Stationsgebied and Hoog Catharijne starts with an explanation of the model of the area and a presentation, after which, (optionally) walking the area can be explored under guidance.
