Visit to Middelburg
Description
Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland, originated in the ninth century as a defensive fortress against the Normans. Because it was the middle castle of Walcheren, the town that grew up around it was called Middelburg. Especially with the construction of the Abbey, the town's development took off. Middelburg received city rights and became the administrative centre of Zeeland. Middelburg was the second VOC town after Amsterdam and experienced its greatest prosperity in the 17th century, when it still had an open connection to the sea. That Middelburg was doing well financially at that time is reflected in the Middelburg streetscape, the town hall, the large warehouses along the quays and the mansions that can be seen all over the city centre. With over 1,200 monuments in the compact city centre, Middelburg is the fifth monument city in the Netherlands
