We are guests in Vlissingen-Oost at the end of May at a Heerema Fabrication Group site where large installations for the oil and gas industry are made. It is part of the Heerema Group.
The Heerema Fabrication Group (HFG) is a global organisation specialising in engineering and making complex installations for the oil and gas industry. This includes not only offshore installations, but also onshore installations.
In 1948, Heerema started with a small construction company in Venezuela. He then expanded his activities to the North Sea in 1980. Through various takeovers, the company grew to its current form. The company now employs more than 1,000 people.

In addition to an engineering arm in Papendrecht, the group has three major manufacturing sites, one of which has been located in Vlissingen-Oost (Heerema Vlissingen B.V.) since 1980.
In Vlissingen, it is possible to have several large projects in progress simultaneously. A 200,000 m2 site is available for this purpose. This includes a substantial assembly hall and several prefab locations. Furthermore, the parts are blasted and painted on site.



Almost 80% of all oil and gas installations in the North Sea are made by Heerema. These include "jackets" (part that stands in the water, see left photo) and the "topsides" (part that stands on the jacket). The latter in particular can serve various purposes from oil and gas treatment to crew quarters.

That these are large installations is shown by the photo on the right of a self-installing gas platform. The jacket with topside has a total height of 133 m. The topside has a height of 30 m and a floor area of 30 by 50 m. Its weight is
8,800 tonnes. The installation was recently delivered.
Meanwhile, even larger projects have been commissioned. Of these, the topside has a weight of 9,200 tonnes and a total height of 157 m.
