Passive building - Rothuizen architects
Description
Passive Construction is a building concept, which makes optimal use of the sun's energy. In a passive building, it is important to minimise energy demand for cooling and heating.
In the 'heating season', the available heat is retained as best as possible and as much free solar heat as possible is captured. The heat from the ventilation air is reused to keep the building warm. In summer, unwanted heating (including from the sun) is avoided as much as possible and the lower night temperature is used to partially cool the building at night. The result is a much more stable indoor climate with smaller temperature peaks and troughs.
A sophisticated installation ensures fresh and healthy air quality. For any building based on passive building technology, the design is essential, because regardless of any architectural concept, it is bound to a number of specific preconditions such as zone-oriented design, correct surface/volume ratio, limited cooling outside surface, airtight detailing, exceptionally good shell insulation, insulated frames, windows, doors and triple glazing.
In the Netherlands, the main focus so far has been on building passive houses. We will now visit Rothuizen (architects, urban planners) in Middelburg. Rothuizen has been more broadly oriented for years, targeting sectors other than housing with passive building. Especially in projects for schools, offices and historical buildings, Rothuizen has shown its expertise in passive building. They realised the first passive school in the Netherlands, for instance, and recently completed the first passive national monument in the Netherlands.
We take a look around their recently completely renovated office in the former silo on Kleverskerkseweg in Middelburg. Rothuizen has Passive Building labels realised or in progress for various projects. Enough expertise, therefore, to also inform us with a substantive programme around this theme.
You will receive a route description and programme for this excursion a week beforehand.
