Zeeland Foundry
Description
We are guests of the Zeeuws Vlaamse Gieterij in Sas van Gent. The company was founded in 1954 by Mr Van Dongen.
The foundry is the only remaining foundry with extensive casting facilities in Zeeland.
It casts both cast steel and cast iron. But casting bronze and aluminium is also possible.
In-house, the drawings provided by the customer are translated into three-dimensional models. Moulds are then made from this conversion, which can be in plastic or wood. The moulds form the basis for the casting.
The process is always an impressive event with high temperatures and splashing liquid steel.
After controlled cooling, the cast parts are removed from the moulds and cleaned. After this, the casting is examined for possible casting defects and shrinkage cracks. This can be done either ultrasonically or magnetically.
The final material structure and strength of the casting is obtained by prolonged heating. For this purpose, the Foundry has two gas-fired thermal furnaces (dimensions: 4.3x1.7x1.5 m).
If required, the workpieces can be machined in its own machine factory.
Its own quality department monitors and guarantees the dimensions and requested quality.
The bottom photo proves that the Foundry is not only found by industry. Large works of art have been cast by the Foundry for various artists.
It is clear that we are dealing here with an uncommon company with a very special kind of production. Worth a visit!
You will receive a route description and programme for this excursion a week beforehand.
