Visit War Museum Gdynia in Axel
On the occasion of the 80th anniversary, we would like to invite you to visit the War Museum Gdynia in Axel.
The museum focuses on the Battle of the Scheldt that took place in Zeeland between September and November 1944. The museum pays particular attention to the fighting in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and Axel in particular, placing it in a larger historical perspective. Especially the Polish liberators of the First Polish Armoured Division get the extra attention they deserve here.
The collection:
The War Museum Gdynia houses the collection of collector Mario Maas from Axel. At the age of six, he started collecting items related to World War II. Over a period of more than 45 years, Mario's collection grew into a unique one.
The museum is located in the centre of the 1944 battlefield. The area around the barn had been flooded by the Germans to impede the Allied advance. In September 1944, four days of heavy fighting between the Polish liberators and the German occupiers took place in the area around the barn. Mario's barn on the Second Shortening was the only one to survive the fierce shelling. All other barns in the area went up in flames.
