Visit to Hall Spars & Rigging
Description
Hall Spars & Rigging is the number one manufacturer of custom-made high-performance carbon fibre masts, spars and rigging. Hall has four locations on three continents and is a supplier to the world's most recognised Grand Prix sailing races.
Founded in Bristol in June 1980, Hall bought the Proctor Masts company in Breskens in 2001.
This acquisition gave Proctor shareholders Jos van de Heuvel and André Vermeulen the opportunity to start manufacturing carbon fibre masts instead of aluminium masts, something that had long been a wish of theirs.
The explosive growth of Hall Spars, especially in the superyacht field, has led to a major expansion of the company, especially in Breskens. In 2009, the new 3400 m² hall was built, fully optimised for the comfortable and efficient manufacturing of masts for these superyachts. This hall houses the 46-metre-long autoclave, which was fully custom-built to Hall's specifications. In this autoclave, under a pressure of 6 bar and a temperature of 121°C, carbon is produced. This autoclave is made to allow the superyacht masts to be produced in one piece and in one cycle. This sets Hall apart from other carbon mast manufacturers. The seamless mast is more aerodynamic than masts made using other systems.
The most important element in rig/sail aerodynamics is that the mast is able to flex optimally to design the desired sail shape, at minimal weight.
All masts are sprayed in-house by Hall in their 60-metre spray booth, achieving optimum finish quality. Engineers use dynamic finite element analysis (FEA) with fixed models to analyse rig loads and they create the lightest, strongest rigs possible. The team of engineers collaborate on the most advanced mast designs possible.
During our visit, we will have the opportunity to follow the entire manufacturing process in addition to explaining the company
