Buffet lecture Climate engineering: Science fiction or future?
Scientists and engineers are investigating technologies to cool down the planet. This can be done for instance by releasing aerosols high up in the stratosphere. Herman Russchenberg (Professor of Atmospheric Remote Sensing and Director of the TU Delft Climate Institute) hopes we will never have to use these techniques, but he thinks it's wise to investigate the possibilities anyway. Frank Biermann (Professor of Global Sustainability Governance UU) sheds light on the political implications: how can climate-engineering be organised in a democratic and fair way, if at all? Philosopher Patrick Smith (PhD, UT) reflects on the ethical hooks and eyes: who is responsible when things go wrong? This event is organised by KIVI Students Twente in cooperation with Studium Generale and HV Ockham.
Buffet Lecture Tinkering with the climate: science fiction or future?
Scientists and engineers are investigating techniques to cool down the planet. Consider, for example, releasing small particles high in the stratosphere. Herman Russchenberg (professor of Atmospheric Remote Sensing and director of the TU Delft Climate Institute) hopes we will never have to deploy these techniques, but thinks it is wise to explore the possibilities. Frank Biermann (Professor of Global Sustainability Governance, UU) sheds light on the political implications of such technologies: can tinkering with the planet ever be done fairly and democratically? Philosopher Patrick Smith (UT) reflects on the ethical snags: who is responsible if something goes wrong? The lectures are in English. This activity is organised by KIVI Students Twente in collaboration with Studium Generale and HV Ockham.
