CEO lecture by Gerald Schotman
On 30 March, KIVI Students Twente organised another CEO lecture, this time starring Gerald Schotman.
'Is it about choices or opportunities?' With that question, Gerald Schotman opened his talk to over 50 students and young engineers. He said he missed lectures quite often in his student days, but recognised that it is a time where the foundations for a successful career are laid. His advice: invest in your student time. Companies look at activities you did outside your curriculum.
Knowing what you really want, the KIVI president illustrates by using 'What you really really want', a snippet from a Spice Girls song. ask yourself the Spice Girls question at least once a year. A broad social network and knowing what you want: these are important ingredients for a career. Challenge yourself and get out of your comfort zone.' According to him, happiness can help build a career, but following your heart, doing what you want, and doing what you are good at is the greatest good. Do what inspires you, do what drives you.
The road to the top that Gerald Schotman walked gave him a lot of experience and knowledge. 'The foundation of that is student time.'
Description
Another lecture from the CEO cycle will take place on 30 March. The aim is to stimulate and enthuse students and young engineers. CEOs of large companies, with engineering degrees themselves, will talk about the course of their careers and about their companies.
This time, Gerald Schotman, CEO of NAM and also President of KIVI, will be a guest at UT. Moderator is Prof Petra de Weerd-Nederhof.
Gerald Schotman studied Civil Engineering at Delft University of Technology and started as an engineer-researcher at Shell in Rijswijk in 1985. He then held various technical and commercial positions abroad, working on assignments in the UK, Brunei and Oman until his appointment in 2006 as Vice President Strategy within Shell's Exploration & Production division. In 2009, he became Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President Innovation and Research & Development.
He was named 'Innovator of the Year 2014' by the expert jury of the Accenture Innovation Awards. Schotman received this award because in previous years he was the main person behind the technological innovations within Shell and in that role involved in all the company's innovations. Schotman has been managing director of the Netherlands Petroleum Company (NAM) since late 2014. Since May 2016, Gerald Schotman has been President of the KIVI.
