For biologist and aeronautical engineer David Lentink, birds are the best models. Why don't lovebirds suffer from turbulence when flying? Because their wings are constantly deforming. That knowledge can help design less rigid aircraft wings. He also measures the strength of flapping wings in his lab. With that, quieter drones and wind turbines are on the horizon. Fine examples of biomimicry: scientists study nature to design smart technology.

Prof David Lentink is attached to the Faculty of Science & Engineering (RUG).
