The Netherlands could wake up tomorrow to find itself under water. Or without electricity. Without the internet. Perhaps even with war on the border. The government advises us to put together an emergency kit and get to know our neighbours. Three days of self-reliance – by then, the worst should be over. But what if a crisis lasts for weeks? How quickly would the certainties on which our society relies – such as electricity, food, order and trust – disappear? Prof. Dr Mariëlle Stoelinga (UT, EEMCS), an expert in the field of critical high-tech infrastructure, and Prof. Dr Michel Dückers (RuG), Professor by Special Appointment of Crises, Security and Health, will explore the question of how we distinguish preparedness from paranoia.
