Configure-to-order in mechanical engineering
Most machine builders work on the principle of engineer-to-order. A new set of drawings is created for each order, obviously based on previously delivered orders. This obviously involves a large amount of engineering hours per order. Besides high costs, this also results in failure costs because not all drawings are 100% error-free. Acquisition is also completely order-driven and focused on single pieces, resulting in a high cost price and limited learning effects. The many new part numbers also has a negative impact on the servicability of the delivered machines.
In tonight's introduction, an example at Stork in Amsterdam is used to explain a possible solution to solve these problems. This is by introducing the so-called Configure To Order system. Hans Gaillard (currently Manager Operations at Stork in Amsterdam) has also gone through this kind of process at several other machine factories in North Holland, including Meyn, Buhrs and Bercomex.
