Description

After almost 100 years, the Noordersluis lock in IJmuiden is due for replacement. A new, larger sea lock should improve accessibility to the port of Amsterdam and boost the region's economy by providing tide-independent space for the ever-growing sea vessels. Construction started in early 2016. The new sea lock will be available for shipping by the end of 2019. The lock has to last at least 100 years, planned and unplanned maintenance, wear and tear of mechanics, oyster and mussel growth, collisions have to be taken into account; the door has to keep functioning as much as possible and Amsterdam has to keep dry feet etc etc. And then there are the many different parties that have to work together in this multidisciplinary project to arrive at the right design choices.
