Hydrogen - Pipeline network, imports and connection with electricity
Hydrogen is an essential building block of our future, sustainable energy supply. Gasunie wants to accelerate the market development of hydrogen. As an independent network operator and connector, it will connect and transport hydrogen from various suppliers to major customers in the Netherlands and neighbouring countries. To this end, the current natural gas pipeline infrastructure will be adapted where necessary, and any new infrastructure will be made available in good time.
In many countries with a lot of sun and/or wind, big plans are being developed to produce hydrogen cheaply, and it is expected that the Netherlands and Europe will also import a lot of this hydrogen. The presentation will focus a lot on how this energy can be imported, as liquid hydrogen, ammonia, gaseous by pipeline, etc., and what that means for the Dutch (and European) energy system. Rotterdam is very ambitious for hydrogen imports. Rotterdam is also working hard on the first new hydrogen pipeline , which connects local supply and demand, and can later be connected to the future national hydrogen network.
The presentation will also discuss the connection between hydrogen and electricity, and offshore wind developments. In studies by joint network operators, it is becoming increasingly clear what the division of roles could look like, and how the energy carriers should work together in an integrated energy system, taking into account each other's weaknesses and strengths.
Mission Gasunie
Gasunie is a leading European energy infrastructure company. Gas transport and gas storage are its core activities. We serve the public interest and facilitate energy transition by offering integrated infrastructure services. We focus on value creation for our shareholder(s) and other stakeholders and apply the highest safety and business standards applied in the sector.
Vision Gasunie
We believe in a sustainable future with a balanced energy mix and a continued role for gas derived from different sources. We believe we serve our customers best with innovative (gas) infrastructure solutions.
About the speaker
Adriaan de Bakker holds a degree in engineering physics from the University of Twente. He has been working for Gasunie for over 30 years. He is currently at the Strategy and Innovation department for almost 4 years working largely on hydrogen, with CCS as a side subject. He is involved in hydrogen studies conducted by the strategy department and by the business departments.
