Asbestos and industrial maintenance
A meeting on asbestos and industrial maintenance was held at KIVI's own building in The Hague on Wednesday 11 February. Some 25 KIVI members and introducers listened to speakers with different backgrounds and discussed how existing legislation on asbestos should be interpreted and where it sometimes pinches in the industry.
Speakers were from Van Oord, the dredging company owns over 250 vessels that operate like small factories around the world and therefore need to be maintained. Oyster Bay, engineering and asbestos inventory agency. ISZW, formerly labour inspectorate and foundation VIA, interest association for the industry in asbestos laws and regulations.
All agree that the current law is too much written for buildings, and that adjustments for practicality in industry are highly desirable. There is also agreement that people's health is paramount and that tackling the source of occupational disease No 1 deserves a structural approach.
Description
That asbestos was used in very, very many installations and components is well known. But how do you know where it is, and more importantly: how do you get rid of it?
How can you have asbestos removed or fixed without health risks, without costs skyrocketing or production being halted for a long time?
And once it is asbestos-free or safe, how do you make sure it stays that way? Are you sure that your international suppliers' products are also asbestos-free?
Laws and regulations for removing asbestos from industrial applications are not always easy to interpret.
These and more topics will be discussed at the KIVI Maintenance meeting on 11 February 2015 on "Asbestos and Industrial Maintenance".
Featuring speakers from Labour Inspectorate (iSZW) and Engineering firm Oesterbaai, among others.
For the meeting, we are still looking for some "real cases". If you still have an example, or a question that can be used as cases, we would like to hear from you. Please email maintenance@kivi.nl for this.
The speakers can then prepare for this.
