On 5 February, the department visited KLM's maintenance centre with 35 visitors.

Description

Engineering & Maintenance is KLM's third business, after Passage and Cargo. They maintain aircraft, engines and components, have about 5,000 employees and an annual turnover of over EUR 1 billion. Most of the work is carried out at Schiphol-East, and they also do Line Maintenance activities at Schiphol-Centre and at more than 40 outstations.

Central today is the Lean Six Sigma Office, a small department with only 15 people including 10 BlackBelts who are working on introducing Lean and Six Sigma. After a short introductory presentation, we get to see what they have achieved in the hangars, the engine shop and a number of component shops.

Afterwards, there is a discussion about what we have seen and about the challenges KLM will face in the coming years. These include new techniques (composite materials), new aircraft (Boeing 787), new IT systems but also changes to the organisation and the resistance they will encounter.
