On 7 February 2024, we were hospitably welcomed by the Municipality of Rotterdam to the South service building of the Maas Tunnel.

In two groups, we were given a vertical tour accompanied by the tunnel inspector: all the way up to the pumps of the old monumental ventilation system to downstairs, to the mechanical parts of the escalators. The escalators have beautiful wooden deck boards that are regularly replaced. But everything will look very nice after the renovation.

On behalf of Maasstad Ingenieurs and Amstelland Ingenieurs, Bram ten Klei and Duncan Klene gave an interactive workshop on the risk-based approach to maintenance of the Maas Tunnel. This explained how to set up an FMECA, thinking from functions, function requirements and function performers and failure mechanisms. What is the role of a risk matrix in this.

And finally, the case of the Maastunnel escalators was used to practice the application.

We concluded with a joint meal and were able to network among the 30 participants present. In conclusion, Rem de Tender, asset manager of the Maas Tunnel, talked about the history from construction onwards and the current challenges.

For instance, height detection is one of the biggest issues. There is a lot of congestion and damage to the tunnel due to trucks that are too high.

It was a successful meeting with satisfied participants, on to the next one!

The sheets of the presentations can be found under 'Documents'

On 7 February 2024, we were invited by the City of Rotterdam to visit the renovated Maastunnel. The Maas Tunnel is a unique historical work of art.

Unfortunately, access to the tour is limited. Due to safety reasons, we will only be admitted in 2 groups of 15 people. We would especially like to invite young people to respond, as we want to increase your interest in engineering and thereby retain you for the engineering sector. So this is your chance to check out spaces where you may otherwise never come!!! Subject to sufficient availability, other target groups are also welcome. However, the tour is not suitable for people with mobility problems. If you have your own PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), please bring your own safety shoes, helmet and orange vest or jacket (no yellow vests).

Parallel to the 2 tours, there will be a workshop (2x same) by Bram ten Klei and Duncan Klene of Maasstad Ingenieurs on the risk-based maintenance approach of the Maas Tunnel using FMECAs, among others.

Afterwards, we all gather in the plenary hall again. After we enjoy a joint meal, Rem de Tender, on behalf of the municipality of Rotterdam, will further inform us about the origins of the Maastunnel, the current maintenance contract and a practical case study on how to deal with height reports.

NB: The number of places available for the workshop, meal and explanation from the Municipality of Rotterdam does exceed 30 participants.

Please indicate when registering, if you are only coming for the workshop and explanation (without a guided tour).
