Description

Earlier this year, Germany was rocked by floods. As a result of heavy rainfall, the discharge of the Danube and Elbe rivers, among others, increased sharply, causing several dike breaches. What can we in the Netherlands learn from these floods? This evening there will be two presentations addressing this question.

18.00:00 Reception with coffee and sandwiches
19:00 Presentation by Jan Put
20:00 Pause
20:15 Presentation by Bas Jonkman
21:15 Closing

The first presentation will be given by Jan Put. He is manager of the flood defences of the Groot Salland Water Board. During the floods, he experienced the work of a unit of the Dutch Corps of Engineers in the disaster area at close quarters. From his background as manager of Groot Salland's flood defences, he will focus on his experiences at the operational level.

The second presentation will be given by Bas Jonkman. He is a professor at the Department of Hydraulic Engineering at TUDelft's Faculty of Civil Engineering. He visited the disaster area with a team after the floods and will talk about his experiences. This will include events in the system, observed dike breaches, the deployment of emergency measures and lessons for the Netherlands.

You are welcome to attend this evening.

PLEASE NOTE: You can register until Friday 13 September 2013.
