Living with water, in necessity and virtue
Description
The Netherlands is engaged in a constant battle against water. Dykes are being reinforced, raised and canals widened. It is necessary for the Netherlands to continue to develop in this area to ensure a safe living environment for our inhabitants, especially in the urban areas. The precious space that remains is increasingly being filled with all kinds of objects. Why should those new projects only look at the primary purpose? With every project, opportunities arise to serve other purposes, so too in the field of water safety. For instance, the Sand Motor off the coast of Ter Heide was initially constructed to counter erosion of the beach but the current shape of the Sand Motor has created extra space for recreation which generates extra income for both the province and the local hospitality industry. Thus, the necessity of the Sand Motor is also made a virtue. Opportunities like this also arise in the field of land development. Wadis, for instance, are constructed for a greater water experience in an urban environment and, besides, it fits within the new water management of retention, storage and drainage. For the future, it is important to keep thinking about new ways of combining water's uses. Should every project combine recreation, water safety and quality of life? Or should these functions remain separate?
The symposium ''Living with water, in necessity and virtue'' looks at the aspects of multifunctional flood defences and land development. The focus here is on linking different functions from different disciplines in a design. Do additional risks arise from the multifunctional nature of the design? Does the multifunctional object actually deliver benefits for both conceived purposes? During the morning programme, three speakers will discuss the topic from different angles, including these questions. Afterwards, speakers and visitors alike will discuss the subject of multifunctional flood defences and land development on the basis of propositions.
The morning is reserved for three plenary lectures in which the subject will be explained from different angles. In the afternoon, several workshop rounds will take place. During these interactive sessions lasting about an hour, visitors can broaden their knowledge and it will be possible for companies and institutions to express their views. These workshops offer organising parties the opportunity to present themselves to future employees, clients and customers from the water sector.
During the breaks, there will be opportunities for interaction between companies and participants at the business market. In addition, each participant can choose to attend a workshop round at the business market. Finally, a networking reception will take place at the end of the day
