MEGA transport - dredger in jungle
Description
Boskalis is working on a mining project in Lelydorp, Suriname, until 2015. Valuable metal ores and phosphates are increasingly difficult to extract.
An opportunity for dredging technology to be applied in mining.
For this integrated mining project, topsoil will be removed and bauxite excavated. The bauxite will then be delivered to the Suralco refinery in Paranam.
There is a need to remove
- about 12.5 million m3 of topsoil of rock and sand, and
- then the remaining 7.5 million m3 of clay.
For this particular work, large quantities of soft and stiff clay are best removed wet and pumped via dredging pipelines because the swampy condition of the site makes transport by truck, especially in the rainy season, inefficient. The choice to transport a medium-sized cutter suction dredger inland has everything to do with efficiency for removing the clay.
For the removal of the 2nd layer, cutter suction dredger 'Orion' had to be transported to its project site.
The cutter suction dredger 'Orion' is in principle not meant to be transported over land.
Meanwhile, the cutter suction dredger has come ashore via the harbour specially constructed for her. Work is now at an advanced stage.
This lecture is about this MEGA transport and the actual work.
From the Business Administration department, we are particularly interested in the 'entrepreneurial' aspects of this project.
We have asked the project leader to address the following questions during the lecture:
about the project:
- how big is the total contract sum, and what part of it are these transport costs
- where are the biggest risks and how did you assess them beforehand?
- how does such a contract come about? How do you do business in Suriname? Is it an open tender? Does part go through development cooperation?
- The signing of the contract was delayed for a long time; yet you had started the work. So how big are the risks facing the company?
- what is the further dredging schedule and what more risks do you expect
managing obstacles during transport
- what were the most difficult road obstacles to overcome? In the film, we see 'power lines being removed'; 'narrow bridges being widened'; 'tropical rains on a muddy road'; 'port construction'
- what preparations did you have to make prior to the transport; survey, consultation with authorities;
- Once the thinking layers above the bauxite to be mined have been removed, do you expect follow-up contracts?
- how big was the item: risk and unforeseen for this transport, and how had you calculated it beforehand
Watch the you tube link beforehand. Then the content of the lecture will be much more engaging
18.30 - 19.00 sandwich
19.00 - 20.00 obstacles during transport and film (17 min)
