Members' meeting with lecture
After not having a membership meeting for several years, KIVI Business Administration members were able to reconvene at a general membership meeting in November 2016. The new business administration board, which has been meeting since mid-2015, started with a short individual introduction before moving on to the formal part. Here, the results of the survey conducted earlier this year among the 1,900-plus business administration members were discussed. The board chose to conduct a survey to gain insight into how it could best serve its members. The results showed that members are mainly interested in company visits. In addition, there is a need for lectures or workshops, provided the subject is business strategy, innovation or management of business processes. Members were also asked to pay attention to quality assurance, leadership, CSR and business anthropology. Finally, the survey shows that members want to attend events provided the day/time and location are convenient and there is little or no cost involved.
Following the survey results, the business administration board discussed plans and ideas for 2017. These are in line with the topic and the results of the survey launched which means that the focus is mainly on organising company visits, events and networking activities. In line with this, the board drew up its policy, setting itself the goal of stimulating knowledge exchange by organising subject-specific activities and networking sessions. Here, social media will play an important role. Through a LinkedIn page, members and interested parties will be kept informed of activities, discussions by theme will be enabled and business news will be shared.
Finally, the status of corporate finance was presented. The presentation showed with regard to the 2015 finances of the business administration department:
- The year 2015 was approved by the audit committee
- Part of the earmarked funds were returned to KIVI's central account in 2015.
Given the number of members we have, it is expected that 2016 will end positively and that sufficient cash will exist in 2017 to organise activities.
Thorsten Friedrich, secretatis of the previous board is discharged and thanked for his contribution to the department of business administration. The new board is installed by general consent.
Speaking presentation Dr A.F. Aalders (Philips Research)
Following the business administration department's membership meeting, Dr A.F. Aalders, Ferrie, (Head of Business Excellence, Philips Research) spoke next. The members present were first briefly taken through Ferrie's personalia after which they moved on to more specific Philips business information. Ferrie took the members by the hand for an hour and a half to give them a behind-the-scenes look at Philips Research. During this grande tour, Ferrie highlighted Philips Research's success factors in innovation. Here, he was told, among other things, that Philips Research concentrates its entire business model on three business pillars, Personal Health, Diagnosis & Treatment and Connected Care & Health Informatics.
It was interesting to hear that Philips is now divesting the cradle of the company, the light division, because of a chosen focus which concentrates on the three aforementioned business pillars. To make these business pillars a success, Philips Research has drawn up seven success factors:
- Vision and Mission: factor outlining the company's vision (improving the lives of 3 billion people by 2025) and mission (improving people's lives).
- Shared targets and improvement programmes: through which Philips Research aims to grow at an increased pace in existing markets by focusing more on customer demand and its own strategic values.
- Ability to attract talent: to remain continuously attractive to talent developing itself and Philips Research.
- Innovative climate: striving for a multidisciplinary and flexible environment in which to work but where customers also feel at home.
- Open innovation: this means that knowledge is not only kept in-house, but that there is also a strong collaboration with external parties such as universities, customers and other stakeholders to enable innovations from multiple perspectives.
- Transformational management: management that is itself continuously developing the company
- Balancing multi-stakeholder interests: this involves continuous consideration of stakeholder wishes and needs as individuals but also how Philips Research can connect its stakeholders.
The seven policy pillars should ultimately lead to the achievement of the set vision in 2025 in which scientists in a superior working environment come up with valuable innovations that enable Philips Research to improve the lives of 3 billion people.
