National Dredging Museum in Sliedrecht
Description
In the world, Dutch and Belgian contractors still dominate the market for large dredging projects.
These parties are Van Oord, BosKalis in the Netherlands, with Jan de Nul and DEME in Belgium.
This leading position in wet contracting and workboat construction is no longer uncontested. China is currently with 25% share, the largest market for dredging, and that market is now locked for foreigners. Chinese contractors have a fleet of 800 vessels and are competitive price-fighters in several major projects elsewhere. China is also rapidly catching up with market leader IHC-Merwede in the construction of Dredgers, thanks to its large domestic market. The rise of the Indian Ocean in Global Trade, driven by China in its battle for raw materials, energy and food, only makes this competitive battle more exciting. After all, after first in the distant past the Atlantic and more recently the Pacific, now the Indian Ocean coastline demands a lot of infrastructure works. That promises an exciting scenario for the coming years!
An example of what the Dutch wet contracting industry is still capable of is the construction of the second Maasvlakte. This area will be reclaimed to give the port of Rotterdam extra capacity and keep it competitive.
Especially for KIVI NIRIA members south of the rivers, it is very fascinating to learn more about what the Netherlands is still big in: Dredging.
This autumn, the theme of the Baggermuseum is the 2nd Maasvlakte. After an introduction, you can learn more about the history of dredging and developments in dredging technology during the guided tour. A visit to a steam dredger is part of this. But the aim is for you to get a good idea of the size and complexity of the largest current dredging project in the Netherlands.
A still unique technology, developed in our fight against water, in which I hope the Netherlands will remain a global leader.
Guest speaker is ir . Bert Groothuizen, working for the contractor Van Oord as director of Marketing, Communication and PR,
Ir. Groothuizen will discuss the position of the Belgian-Dutch world position in the dredging industry and how the van Oord firm thinks it will be able to withstand, if not get back in the dock, the emerging competition from the Chinese in the coming years.
In addition, Mr Remco van de Ven, as chairman of the museum, will inform you about the history of the dredging industry, the 2nd Maasvlakte exhibition and the permanent exhibition at the museum.
An exhibition on the improvements to the Panama Canal is currently running at the museum. The photo of part of the scale-built model shown here gives you an idea of what to expect from this museum, and definitely worth an individual visit in advance (entrance €4).
