On Wednesday evening, 27 October, the second general membership meeting of the KIVI Chartered Engineering Section will take place. As part of this meeting, we will discuss Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in more detail, a topic that raises the necessary questions among Chartered and Incorporated Engineers, as well as candidates. To provide us with useful inspiration, we are proud to welcome Ben Jones from the Engineering Council with a presentation on CPD in the UK. Ben has worked for the Engineering Council since 2012, initially as Professional Development Coordinator and since 2018 as Product Manager Professional Standards, where CPD has always been central. During that time, Ben has contributed greatly to the development of CPD from a 'good idea' to a formal quality standard for engineers. We expect to learn a lot from him in this interactive session.

Every Chartered or Incorporated Engineer must log 50 CPD hours annually, spread across all charterership competencies. After two years, that period closes and, if at least 100 CPD hours have been recorded, the registration as a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer is renewed for another two years (also known as 're-registration'). Randomly, KIVI checks whether CPD hours have been properly logged. However, CPD is not just there to meet the rules for re-registration, it is also a mirror you hold up to yourself. So CPD is also about giving yourself insight into your professional development, discovering your own areas of improvement, in which competency, and actively working on these in order to become stronger professionally. Self-development and reflection on it is an important pillar of Chartership.

The Chartered Engineering Department is keen to discuss with members how CPD can best be implemented. What counts as CPD and how to register it? From this session, there will be a new handle that Chartered and Incorporated Engineers can stick to in their CPD and its registration.

In short, we are looking forward to an exciting evening.

Due to Covid19, space is limited. Therefore, the evening will be organised in a hybrid manner. You can attend live but also join digitally via teams.

Put the date in your diary.

The second general meeting of the KIVI Chartered Engineering department will take place on Wednesday evening 27 October. As part of this general meeting, we will engage with each other in a session on Continuing Professional Development (CPD), a topic that triggers quite a few questions among Chartered and Incorporated Engineers, as well as candidates. To provide us with useful inspiration, we are proud to welcome Ben Jones from the Engineering Council with a presentation on CPD in the UK. Ben has been working for the Engineering Council since 2012, initially as a Professional Development Coordinator and since 2018 as a Product Manager Professional Standards, always focusing on CPD. During that period, Ben contributed greatly to the development of CPD from a 'good idea' to a formal quality standard for engineers. We expect to learn a lot from him in this interactive session.

Every Chartered or Incorporated Engineer must register 50 CPD hours every year, divided over all chartership competences. After two years, the registration period is closed, and, if at least 100 CPD hours have been registered, the registration as Chartered or Incorporated Engineer is prolonged by two years (also referred to as 're-registration'). KIVI will apply spot checks to see if CPD hours have been registered correctly. However, CPD is not only there to comply to the requirements for re-registration, it is also intended as a mirror for personal reflection. CPD is there to provide yourself with insight about your own professional development, to discover your own focus points for improvement and in which competence, and to work on this actively to increase your professional strength. Your own development and personal reflection are essential elements in chartership.

The Chartered Engineering Section would like to engage with members about how CPD can be done. What counts as CPD how do you register that? From this session, guidelines will be created to help Chartered and Incorporated engineers with CPD and the registration thereof.

In short, we are looking forward to a fascinating evening.

Space is limited due to Covid19. Therefore, the evening will be organised in a hybrid way. You can be present live, but you can also join digitally via teams.

Please reserve the date in your agenda.
