last 24 June, in the Great Hall of the KIVI NIRIA building, 43 people took part in the non-verbal communication training. The training was provided by Geert Hommes of TOM-institute(www.tominstitute.com).
After a brief introduction to the evening's programme, Geert outlined the theoretical framework on the basis of which he developed his training. Some 80% of our communication is non-verbal and un(der)conscious. It determines how we are perceived and how we perceive others. In this, our own perception and that of our interlocutor play an important role. What you say and especially what you do not say, but show, must be balanced. The concept of non-verbal leakage (NVL) used by Geert is the mechanism by which we try to achieve that balance, unconsciously, in our communication. Geert would have lost his audience at this point if he had not supported his story with clear video footage, which even included Peter R. de Vries. In doing so, he made these psychological aspects of communication accessible to us as well.
After a short break to let things sink in, Geert gave us the opportunity to practice recognising emotions in facial expressions. He brought an interactive programme that was run on the laptops he brought along. Surprising how quickly the participants, after some practice, scored 50-80%.
In the third part of the training, Geert introduced 3 personality types with their non-verbal characteristics and expected communication style. For each of these basic types, he also gave tips on the communication strategy to be used.
The training was assessed as good to very good, both in terms of content and organisation (90% of the participants gave both a 7 or higher). Or as one participant put it:
"short, intense and yet concise, this makes one curious for more".
We certainly intend to put this training on the agenda more often in the future.

Description
TOM Training is about non-verbal communication. Over 80% of our communication is non-verbal. We call that "The Other Message". What is that other message? How can you recognise and interpret it? How do you learn to use it to improve your communication?
TOM is for people who communicate a lot. And therefore actually for everyone. TOM is a professional training developed for professionals who need to master all aspects of communication for success in their work.
Non-verbal communication, is something we do unconsciously, all day long. Our non-verbal communication makes who we are and reveals our message that we do not speak. During this evening, a tip of the iceberg will be revealed.
After this evening, you will be more aware of what non-verbal communication does for you but also how it can work against you. You will be given tools to recognise people by their non-verbal behaviour and their communication style. You will learn to connect with them, how best to communicate with them, to achieve the best possible result.
The evening consists of three parts;
- Background and where does non-verbal communication come from how does it arise
- Interactive training on PCs (please bring your laptop)
- Practical application in your work as a salesperson, manager and project leader.
Each training course is tailor-made for a specific target group, in this case commercial engineers
17.00 Reception with sandwiches (included in the price)

21:00 End of workshop
