Excursion to OSLO 6-8 June 2024
KIVI excursion Oslo
Participants: 33
Date: 6 - 9 June 2024; duration four days
Hotel: Clarion Hotel
Organisation: Gerard Streng and Ton Voets
Our visit focused on Oslo Municipality's most recent urban development, which started in 2000. In that year, it was decided to develop the coast of the fjord on which Oslo is located. The name of the project is Fjord City. The existing industry and shipyards were relocated and the vacant area was developed into a residential area with social and cultural facilities. Car traffic disappeared underground so that the area became a pleasant walking area. The whole area exudes a safe and pleasant tranquillity with its various iconic highlights. The development is still in full swing. The explanation of the plan was given at a lecture at the Department of Urban Development data by its director on Friday morning. In the afternoon, we visited Tjuvholmen, a peninsula with a completed development of housing, restaurants and a museum by Renzo Piano. This development is a private initiative with supervision from the municipality. All parking is underground, making Tjuvholmen a pleasant place to stroll. The developer gave a talk at The Salmon restaurant about the problems they encountered during realisation. This modern-looking residential area is a surprising feat of contemporary architecture. Square metre prices range from €10,000 to €20,000/m2 GLA. But then you live beautifully with a view of the endless waters of the Oslo fjord.
Thursday focused on the famous architecture firm Snøhetta, with offices in almost every continent. The firm's director gave a lecture in a seminar room of what may be the most extraordinary building of this excursion, the Oslo Opera House. With a walkable roof of white marble, the building resembles a collection of ice floes. For the interior, a lot of wood has been conceived with wavy lines somewhat reminiscent of Alvar Aalto's work. Most of the group saw Leonard Bernstein's opera Candide here on Friday night, which was a thrilling experience. Finally, there was a tour by the architects who designed the Deichmann museum.
Saturday was spent on museum visits, not forgetting the new Munch museum. We also visited Oslo City Hall, where the Nobel prizes are awarded annually.
We can look back on a successful trip with a pleasant atmosphere in the group. In the evening, there was a lot of after-dinner chatter in the hotel bar, which was also frequented by many young Oslo people and where a live DJ was on weekends to add to the atmosphere.

The Oslo Opera House on the waterfront, designed by agency Snøhetta. Here we were given a tour and a lecture by the architectural firm's director.
