Description

Visit the under construction new EYE Film Institute Netherlands in Amsterdam on Thursday 17 March 2011. This extraordinary building, characterised by large free spaces and huge cantilevers on both sides, is currently in an interesting construction phase, with the spatial steel structures clearly visible. Construction of the EYE Film Institute in the new Overhoeks district (Amsterdam Noord) started in September 2009.

Construction company M.J. de Nijs en Zonen BV is the main contractor. The project was made possible by a collaboration between public authorities and the developers ING Real Estate and Ymere, which as partners in the Ontwikkelcombinatie Overhoeks are developing the area on the north bank of the IJ. The design of the new museum building is by the Viennese architecture firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, which was previously responsible for the high-profile Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Advice on the complex supporting structure is provided by ABT.

With the Filmmuseum, Amsterdam's new urban district gains a spectacular landmark right on the water in the form of a streamlined, wide-flaring shell. The programme consists of four cinemas (300, 120 and 80 seats respectively), library, study centre, café-restaurant, museum shop, workspaces, and a multifunctional space for exhibitions and educational activities. The GLA is 8,500 sq m
