Lecture/excursion FLOWERS AND FLOWERS Neighbourhood
Despite the rain, there was a large turnout for the inspirational lecture and excursion of the New Hague School by Marcel Teunissen with the theme this time being the Bloemen- en Vruchtenbuurt. After the lecture at KIVI headquarters, there was a bus tour through the Archipel via the Vogelwijk to Jan Wils' internationally acclaimed design, the Papaverhof. The next excursion to the Laakkwartier is on 20 September next. Visit the KIVI website for details.
Description
The Bloemen- and Vruchtenbuurt are two residential areas on either side of Laan van Meerdervoort that are part of the 1918-1940 western urban expansion. Most of the area belonged to the municipality of Loosduinen until 1 January 1923. In 1922, the municipality held an ideas competition for the area to be annexed. When the council adopted the resulting Plan West in 1927, most of the Bloemenbuurt had already been completed. For the construction of the Vruchtenbuurt, it formed the foundation. Characteristic of both neighbourhoods is the garden village-like character with low buildings. Compared to earlier expansions, the street pattern has been enlivened by squares and parks.
THEMES: CITY GOVERNMENT AND HIGH-STRUCTURE
The walk towards the west shows the coherent development between the main structure determined by municipal direction and the flowering of the New Hague School. While the first part of the Bloemenbuurt was heterogeneous and almost experimental in its layout, the Vruchtenbuurt shows more tranquillity in its building pattern.
Of interest are a number of transverse axes of the Laan van Meerdervoort, for which the buildings were created via sketch plans. The buildings of squares and street corners are marked by height accents, which contribute to the recognisability of the neighbourhoods.
