Operational cooperation, political cooperation and materiel cooperation in defence are crucial for a credible Europe.
In this seminar we discuss experiences, developments, pitfalls and how it could be done.
Operational cooperation:
A European army is further away than ever but European capabilities are essential. The only certainty for European military capabilities is interdependence. Dependence on other armed forces, dependence on other countries and also dependence on other partners. That is what the armed forces must be equipped to do, but above all they must be credible as the ultimate means of ensuring our security.
Materiel cooperation:
For the future, it is essential that the EU has a broad industrial base in defence and security. High-quality and innovative industry from across the EU must play a role in this. Certainly also Dutch industry. Large companies, but especially SMEs as suppliers to the big European main contractors. How can these key innovative players contribute to strengthening the European Defence Technological and Innovative Base. What is the role of EDA, the European Commission and the Dutch government. What can you do.

LtGen bd Ton van Loon served as an officer in the Royal Netherlands Army for 36 years. For a large number of years of his impressive career, he had to deal daily with the possibilities and limitations of international cooperation. Both in Kosovo, Afghanistan, NATO and as commander of the German-Dutch Army Corps.
Pieter Taal is Commissioner for Military Production at the Ministry of Economic Affairs.
From his position, he is daily involved in the development of European cooperation policy in the field of defence equipment and industry. From 2008-2012, he was Assistant Director Defense Industry at the European Defence Agency.
