The Politics and DV Engineering working group analyses current political developments in the defence sector. It provides independent facts and interpretation from the technological knowledge and experience of engineers.
The Politics and DV Engineering working group has questions and comments on the Defence Energy Transition Action Plan, published by the Secretary of State for Defence on 16 July 2020. The comments have been prepared based on publicly available information and defence technology knowledge and experience.
Defence's energy transition plan has been a long time coming. The working group was therefore pleased when it was published in July 2020. Unfortunately, it is a little concrete implementation of the Defence Energy and Environment Strategy (DEOS). Clear plans for specific capabilities and associated schedules and budgets are lacking. A number of studies and trials are mentioned, but not whether they will be implemented and under what conditions. Unfortunately, this leaves no way to assess and monitor whether the 2030 and 2050 targets can be met.
Questions and comments from the working group on this action plan can be viewed and downloaded here.
