HRSMC - HIMS Sustainability workshop
Description
The Holland Research School of Molecular Chemistry (HRSMC, a UvA/VU/UL partnership) and the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS, UvA) are organising a Sustainability Workshop on Friday afternoon 23 September in the CWI building. As part of the HRSMC Graduate Programme 'Sustainability: the Molecular Approach' and the HIMS Centre of Excellence 'Sustainable Chemistry', this Workshop is being organised for PhD students and staff members affiliated with the HIMS institute and the HRSMC as a research school. This English-language Workshop will last one afternoon.
With a first "General lecture" we want to put the concept of sustainability in a broader, political framework for our chemists: the Dutch and foreign PhD students and staff members present. Prof Jacqueline Cramer (UU) will deliver a lecture for this purpose: 'Towards a circular economy: challenges and opportunities'. There will then be three plenary lectures within three themes:
-Dr. René Kleijn (UL) - Theme 1: Recycling and materials - 'Resource scarcity & circular economy'
-Prof. Gert Jan Kramer (UU) - Theme 2: Energy - 'Fixing the Energy/Climate problem: calibrating the pace of change'
-Prof. Appy Sluijs (UU) - Theme 3: Climate - 'Climate and Carbon Cycling during the Eocene Greenhouse World'
Then, within the three themes, there will be three workshops in parallel sessions by the above-mentioned people. However, within Theme 3, Prof Jan Maarseveen (UvA) will conduct the workshop.
We believe that with these renowned scientists we have put together a particularly good programme to put the concept of sustainability in a broader framework.
