100 years of inventions, by Philips Research
Description
2014 marks the 100th anniversary of Gilles Holst's appointment as the first director of the Philips Physics Laboratory (NatLab) in Eindhoven, the beginning of Philips Research. The aim of this research laboratory was (and still is) to develop new technology on its own, obtain patents and apply it to products. It produced an impressive stream of pioneering innovations, which have changed or will change the world dramatically. Museum Boerhaave now hosts the exhibition 100 YEARS OF INVENTIONS, Made by Philips Research.
In the last century, electrotechnical devices radically changed our lives. Light bulb, telephone, refrigerator and washing machine entered our homes in large numbers. Often with a commanding presence, because almost everywhere the furnishing of the living room conformed to the TV.
Gradually, electrical appliances also disappeared again, for instance the electric dryer hoods as well as the cassette recorder and the stereo with their imposing facade of knobs, lights and pointers. In general, electrical appliances now betray their presence less emphatically. Not that electrical engineering has become less important - quite the contrary - but the innovations are smaller, smarter and more tailored to the individual.
This lecture looks back to the heyday of the household electrical appliance, when we all sat in front of the radio and Philips was such a trusted family friend. It also looks at the technical-historical development of these innovations. This was not a logical succession of techniques, but was often a struggle between different techniques, so the outcome could sometimes be surprising.
The lecture will be given by Ad Maas, curator of Museum Boerhaave, responsible for the exhibition 100 YEARS INVENTIONS, Made by Philips Research and co-author of the book Philips Research, 100 years of inventions that matter. You can visit the exhibition and the rest of the museum on your own before or after the lecture.
There is a maximum of 150 places available. Registration is via the Museum Boerhaave website (see link at the bottom of the page).
The lecture will be held from 13:30-14:30.
Please take time to visit the museum before and after the lecture. Museum Boerhaave is the Rijksmuseum for the History of Natural Sciences and Medicine. Some highlights of our collection include Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's microscopes and Christiaan Huygens' inventions, such as the first pendulum clock. There are also objects from Dutch Nobel Prize winners, impressive anatomical preparations and the Leiden Sphaera is the oldest Dutch planetarium.
The curator of the exhibition will give a lecture especially for KIVI members. He talks about the electrotechnical innovations in our lives in the past century. The technical-historical development of these innovations will also be highlighted
