Electrical safety is well regulated in NEN 3840: High Voltage

Besides all kinds of legal requirements, we also have NEN standards that ensure safe workplaces. But who really knows the legal requirements? Who reads the NEN standards? And more importantly, who applies them?

These accidents never happen!

Accidents involving high-voltage installations (incl. medium-voltage) almost always have a serious outcome. If they survive at all, people are often scarred for life.

The procedures are not always watertight, and sometimes the installation simply does not allow proper compliance.

Legislators do their best, but legal texts are not often properly read or understood.

Both using and working on electrical installations involve a certain risk of injury: injuries caused by electric shock, electric burns, electric arcs, or by fire or explosion arising from electrical energy.

Its purpose is to provide general requirements for the safe operation of and work on, with or near electrical installations.

The NEN 3840 standard regulates the operation of high-voltage installations (incl. medium-voltage installations).

Operational management of electrical installations includes both the use of the installation, being able to operate electrical work equipment, and working on or near installations due to maintenance, repairs, expansions and demolition.

Not many people know that many rules in standards arise as a result of accidents. They are not made-up rules, but rules, which arose from practical experience.

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) defines high voltage as an electrical voltage above 1000 volts AC (effective) or 1500 volts DC.

N.B. The standard NEN 3140 regulates the operation of electrical installations and electrical equipment at low voltage (up to 1000 VAC, up to 1500 VDC).

Richard Groenewegen provided the compact information sessionElectrical safety in medium and high voltage especially for the KIVI Department of Electrical Engineering: 'Developments in new NEN 3840'.

Richard Groenewegen is a member of the standards committee that drafted this new NEN 3840. He is director of an inspection company and a training company and has specialised in this matter for many years. Besides theory, examples will be given on inspection methods.

As an electrical engineer, you cannot afford to be left behind!

The excellently organised information session NEN 3840 Medium and High Voltage was attended by 34 participants!
