E Lunch session: Mandela's secret in communicating the energy transition

The energy transition brings challenges on many fronts. There are technical challenges, there are societal challenges, financial and legal challenges. All challenges can be overcome and the goals of the energy transition are achievable, provided timely attention is paid to them. That timeliness is also a challenge!
The Climate Act led to the Regional Energy Strategies drawn up by the various energy regions. Municipalities are tasked with translating the RES into local solutions for neighbourhoods within the municipality. These make it clear where the district will get its energy for heating when the district is disconnected from gas, where the windmills will be located and how many; where the PV fields will be located and how large the surface area will be, whether geothermal energy can be used, etc. etc.
A success factor is the concept of support: how well does the municipality know how to involve the residents of the neighbourhood in decision-making on the issues that directly affect them: both financially and emotionally as.... Presenting a ready-made plan that does not involve residents is a guarantee of implementation failure. People are not involved, so do not own the problem, nor the solution.
The Municipality sees the transition as a tough task and solving an important puzzle. But citizens see the transition, as a threat to their way of life.
Nelson Mandela Retrospective recording
"If You talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to His Head. If You talk to him in his language, that goes to his Heart"
Nelson Mandela had to hold the state of South Africa together. To this end, he applied the Spiral Dynamics method, also called method Mandela's Secret. Nelson Mandela used this method for 'his Rainbow Nation' to connect parties on the brink of civil war. In the interaction, he kept asking himself "do we understand each other?" and "are we looking at the issues in the same way". His method distinguishes different character types of people and classifies them by colours. This allows you to estimate how participants will behave in the negotiation process. He involved all negotiators in negotiating the solutions the country needed. As a result, negotiations went more smoothly and possibly faster.
