The Robust Project

The ROBUST project, which was completed in 2025, aimed to develop a smart and flexible system for tackling grid congestion in cities.

Since April 2021, research organisations, public authorities and businesses have been investigating new ways in Utrecht to reduce congestion and generate grid flexibility, for example through the use of smart, bidirectional charging of electric cars.

The project marked the first time that dynamic grid-aware charging had been put into practice. What were the experiences, and what insights did it yield?
