Working safely on electric vehicles is now even more accessibly regulated in the revised NEN 9140:

The NEN 9140 Working safely on electric vehicles has been revised and updated to cover safe working on electric vehicles.

But who is really aware of the new standard? Who reads the NEN standards? And more importantly, who applies them?

With the introduction of electrically powered vehicles, new technologies are entering the automotive industry. These technologies are also associated with new risks, which can lead to serious damage and injury if handled inexpertly. One of these new risks is the presence of dangerous electrical voltages rising to many hundreds of volts.

Accidents never happen!

Accidents when working on electric vehicles almost always end badly. People are often scarred for life.

Procedures are not always foolproof and sometimes the situation simply does not allow proper adherence to procedures.

Legislators do their best, but legal texts are not often properly read or understood.

When working on electric vehicles, there is a certain risk of injury: injury caused by electric shock, electric burns, electric arcs, or by fire or explosion arising from electrical energy.

The aim is to provide general requirements for working safely on, with or near electrical installations, e-vehicles.

The standard NEN 9140 regulates safe working on electric vehicles.

Working safely on e-vehicles includes working on or near the High Volt system present in the vehicle, due to maintenance, repairs, extensions and demolition.

Not many people know that many rules in the standards arise as a result of accidents. They are not made-up rules, but rules, which arose from practical experience.

How can car mechanics work safely with installations and batteries in e-vehicles?
How do salvage and emergency services handle these vehicles?

The revision of NEN 9140 answers this, supported by overviews, flow charts and a step-by-step plan.

Arjen Westerterp is providing a compact Information Session "Revised NEN 9140 Working safely on electric vehicles"especially for the KIVI Department of Electrical Engineering

Arjen Westerterp Lecturer in e-vehicle engineering at Noorderpoort is chairman of the standards committee, which revised the NEN 9140 and made it suitable for future e-vehicles.

Besides theory, examples are given on inspection methods and practical situations.

As an electrical engineer, you need to keep abreast of the change in this standard if you work with e-vehicles!

Short animation to highlight NEN 9140 standard. This standard on "working safely with e-vehicles" is growing in importance. More and more electric vehicles, or hybrids, are appearing on Dutch roads. A revision to keep the standard modern has been made.
