COVRA
The Central Organisation For Radioactive Waste (COVRA) is tasked with collecting, processing and storing radioactive waste from nuclear power plants, industry, hospitals and research institutions. The Department of Technical Physics paid an afternoon visit to COVRA.
After being welcomed in the information room, a company film was shown. A presentation on COVRA was then given by Mr Thomas van Hoeve, who also provided further guidance. All aspects of storage and processing of radioactive material were discussed; there were many questions. The visit to the permanent exhibition was extremely interesting as much of the process of processing is displayed here. A visit to the high-level waste storage building followed. Extensive discussions and many questions meant there was no time to visit the low-level waste storage buildings.
KIVI's delegation consisted of 15 people. COVRA's mission is to provide full disclosure on the process of waste treatment and storage. The provision of information is excellent. KIVI visitors were impressed by the excellent, very solid infrastructure for handling radioactive waste, materials and utensils. The safety and risk management is confidence-inspiring.
