On 12 November last, a delegation from KIVI, the Royal Institute of Engineers, visited PANalytical Eindhoven. The visit was requested by KIVI's Department of Engineering Physics as part of its programme of lectures, symposia and excursions for professionals, students and retirees in engineering physics. Besides physicists, the gathering included business, mechanical and electrical engineers.

The visitors were welcomed by Ms De Kuster, who handled the contacts with KIVI, and were then given a fascinating presentation by the general manager of PANalytical Eindhoven, Mr Van Andel. He spoke enthusiastically about the company's history, corporate culture and positioning in the international market. He also explained what PANalytical's products are used for, focusing on X-ray analysis in a diversity of material science applications in science and industry, and outlined a world as it would have looked had these products not existed. Many technically substantive questions showed the interest of the visitors.

A tour of the company premises followed, starting on the top floor to the ground floor, from the research and development department to actual production. Much of this production takes place in clean rooms, which were also visited. People were impressed by the professionalism at various parts and the good atmosphere on the shop floor. This will certainly also be due to the high-tech work required in the manufacture of the X-ray equipment and to the sophisticated architecture of the new building.

All in all, this was a very successful visit to a company one can be proud of having in our country. We warmly thank PANalytical management and staff for the hospitality enjoyed and wish them every success in their activities.

Description

PANalytical is the world market leader of analytical equipment and software for X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF).

This equipment is used for scientific research and development, for process management in industrial applications and for semiconductor metrology. It is used to determine and thus characterise the structure or chemical composition of products such as cement, steel, polymers, glass and catalysts.

PANalytical is the only major supplier of this equipment that has its own X-ray tube factory. These X-ray tubes are used in their own products, but are also sold to third parties.

Last November we visited PANalytical's headquarters in Almelo and this year we will visit the X-ray tube plant in Eindhoven.
