Description

Sonnenborgh - museum & observatory
Located on a centuries-old stronghold in Utrecht's city centre is Sonnenborgh - museum & observatory. As its name suggests, the observatory, built in 1853, is more than a museum. Visitors can take a guided tour of the building and the stronghold dating back to 1552. Descend into the 16th century and discover the cannon holes in the casemates behind the three-metre-thick walls, take a look at the old well or the 16th-century latrine. Sonnenborgh - museum & observatory also houses a rich collection of telescopes. In the past, these were used to research many things like stars, planets and the sun. Nowadays, some of these telescopes can still be observed on viewing evenings, Sundays and during special events.
