Description

"A Concentrating Solar Power (CSP)" solar power as reliable as a gas or coal-fired power plant
Speaker: Evert du Marchie van Voorthuysen, GEZEN Foundation

and

"The need for renewable energy" And the role of CSP in it
Speaker: Sietse de Haan, Association for Solar Power Plants

In solar thermal power plants, solar rays are concentrated by parabolic mirrors on a small surface, which thus gets a high temperature. This is used to produce electricity in the traditional way, with steam turbines and generators. Part of the heat harvested during the day is stored in a cheap medium, e.g. liquid alkaline nitrate, allowing electricity to be produced in the evening and at night. In a European power grid with a large share of CSP, this basically solves the problem of 24-hour discontinuity of solar energy.
In most areas of the world, there is a big difference in yield between summer and winter, which is the yearly discontinuity. There is no proven technical solution to this yet. The lecture will discuss the various possibilities for addressing the problem of year-discontinuity in renewable energy supply.

The second presentation will discuss the need for renewable energy in general, the political consequences, geographical developments and, of course, the advantages of CSP in all this

Speaker(s)

Dr Evert H. du Marchie van Voorthuysen was associate professor of physics at the University of Groningen before his early retirement in 2003, where he conducted research in the fields of nuclear physics, solid state physics and fundamentals of quantum mechanics. Today, he is founder/director of the Foundation for the Promotion of Large-scale Exploitation of Solar Energy (GEZEN) and develops technology for extracting water from the dry atmosphere for applications in desert climates as part of the company SOLAq BV.

Sietse de Haan studied physics and chemistry in Utrecht and then chose a career in education. He taught physics at various high schools in the Netherlands and abroad. For the past eight years, he has mainly focused on the transition to renewable energy and in particular the role of CSP in this.

The theme of this evening meeting is a reprise of a lecture on CSP that Mr Van Voorthuysen gave to the TME Section back in 2006, and which, according to a recent member consultation, emerged as the most interesting to put on the agenda again - as a 2.0 version
