Description

"Arctic Research" & Knowledge for a Sustainable Arctic (film)
Changing Arctic Ecosystems
The meeting will be introduced by Ir. Bas Bolman.

About the film:
Using beautiful images, marine biologist Martine van den Heuvel-Greve of IMARES Wageningen UR talks about her research on Spitsbergen into possible effects of new activities in the Arctic. By developing new knowledge, she hopes to contribute to the international dialogue on where and how new activities can take place. The Arctic is attracting strong interest. Retreating sea ice is freeing up space for new activities such as oil and gas extraction, shipping and tourism. These new activities offer opportunities, but also complex challenges such as the potential pressure on people and the environment. Not only oil and gas companies and environmental organisations are active in the area, but also researchers. They investigate the changing Arctic ecosystems and how new activities affect them. During an expedition to Svalbard in June 2013, the researchers and their activities were followed by a camera team for a week. Filming took place in the village of Ny-Ålesund, 1235 kilometres from the North Pole. The surroundings of Ny-Ålesund were also captured, including the beautiful Kongsfjorden and the Blomstrand glacier. This production came about thanks to the collaboration between Maritime Campus Netherlands, NHL University of Applied Sciences and IMARES Wageningen UR. The images were shot by Ruben Kocx of HPM

About the presenter:
Bas Bolman is programme manager at research institute IMARES in Wageningen. Bolman holds a master's degree in international marine resource management (Cum Laude). In 2007, he studied the rapid growth of the salmon sector in Chile. He also has research experience in indigenous agricultural systems in Java, Indonesia and conflict management in shellfish fisheries in the Dutch part of the Wadden Sea. For the Ministry of Fisheries, he worked for several years as process coordinator, establishing public-private partnerships to work towards innovative techniques for sustainable fisheries and aquaculture.

From 2010, he worked for Wageningen University's research institute IMARES, where he founded the Arctic programme, an alliance between Wageningen University's research institutes IMARES, LEI and Alterra. As of 2014, the research programme (2 million euros) consists of 7 projects and 8 PhD students, covering a multitude of disciplines in Russia, Norway, Greenland and Canada.

Speaker(s)

Bolman is responsible for building alliances and collaborations with the international offshore industry, NGOs and governments to develop sustainability tools for reducing environmental pressures in multi-stakeholder environments in order to achieve best practices, new standards and regulation. These alliances can sometimes result in joint industry projects (Joint Industry Projects) with partners such as Shell, Royal Boskalis Westminster and Heerema Marine Contractors. He was also involved in ´Building with Nature´, a programme with the offshore dredging industry and research institutes aimed at smart use of ecosystem dynamics for marine infrastructure development, involving stakeholders throughout project design and development. For this programme, he was responsible for a project to identify implementation opportunities in Singapore.
