Below are the presentations of the lectures.

Description

Lecture evening on geotechnical challenges earthquake engineering.

About the lectures:
* International practice earthquake engineering
In international practice, earthquakes often play an important role in design. This starts first with determining the load, the hazard. Then with establishing the criteria and local conditions. Finally, performing the earthquake analysis in which both simple and very complex models are used. This process is illustrated by two projects.

* Relationship between NPR9998 and international practice
With the publication of the NPR9998, there is a practical guideline in the Netherlands that offers both the structural engineer and geotechnical consultant tools for making earthquake-resistant designs. How does the NPR9998 compare to other (international) guidelines and in what way does the consultancy practice in the Netherlands match the international consultancy practice?

* Measurement and monitoring for engineering input
Existing structures experience the largest share of problems in Groningen. How can in-situ measurement methods reduce uncertainty in construction properties? A measurement method that can measure in-situ dynamic construction properties is discussed. In addition: seismic monitoring systems are used in various constructions abroad. When is a seismic monitoring system interesting and what advantages does such a system offer?

* Analysis and strengthening of row houses
Regarding the analysis of row houses, different calculation methods including impact and strengthening measures will be discussed. The role of geotechnics will be highlighted, such as modelling soil-structure interaction and dealing with displacements instead of forces.
