50 years of gas in the Netherlands...., and now what?
Description
The discovery in Slochteren of the Groningen gas field in 1959 ushered in an era of a new form of energy for the Netherlands. It meant that the entire energy system of extraction, transmission and distribution had to be redesigned in a relatively short period of time. On the consumption side too, the necessary system changes in the public (e.g. power plants) and private (heating, cooking) spheres were made at a stunning pace.
This was not a new phenomenon: historically, there had already been lifecycles of other forms of energy. Now, in 2013, after 50 years of gas, the Netherlands again faces major changes in energy systems, from fossil to renewable. Will there be a new lifecycle, and if so, which one? What choices are there? And is there still a future for gas?

Speaker(s)
Hans van Luijk (1943) graduated in chemical engineering from the University of Groningen. After his military service, he joined Shell International in The Hague. He held a large number of technical and (later) management positions in Europe, Central America, Africa and Australia, often in refining. Among other positions, he was managing director of Shell Netherlands and the first president of Shell Global Solutions.
After his retirement (2001), he chaired the Executive Board of TU Delft until March 2008. Subsequently, he was a member of the Regie Orgaan Energie Transitie, which advises the government on (the transition to) sustainable energy. From 2005 until the beginning of this year, he was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie
