Summary of lecture:
Forty years ago, Jerry Boulogne got his hands on a book with the comment here's your family mentioned, maybe there's a story in it. It was only after retirement that he decided to research it and write a book about it. This titled "The Secret of the Blacksmith, the history of my Veluwe family", to be published in 2025.
The presentation will cover the industrial development of the area where the family lived and worked, covering the period from the 18th century to the mid-20th century.
In his talk, Jerry discusses the technical and business aspects of the companies in which they worked and the engines and machines, which they later developed, built and sold to companies in the Netherlands and abroad.
Information about the speaker:
Jerry Boulogne (1952) is a mathematical engineer (Delft, 1978) and trained as a mathematics teacher (Leiden, 2008). He graduated as Operations Research trainee at E.C.T. Rotterdam and then served as youngest naval service officer on minehunters of the Royal Netherlands Navy. After his service, he worked in the financial sector as a developer of IT infrastructures and products at a US company (NCR) and a Dutch bank (Rabobank Netherlands). At Shell, he did similar work until 1996, most recently as information manager at an Operating Company in Egypt.
In his period as interim manager and self-employed entrepreneur, he increasingly focused on education. This by, among other things, developing a programme to encourage immigrant Rotterdam youths to switch to a technical education. He also founded an association for the development of "Cloud" services for education and SMEs (ASP Forum Nederland) with four companies in the late 1990s.
In 2004, he made the switch to education and took a course at Leiden University to do so. He taught mathematics to mavo, havo and vwo students until mid-2020 and then coached a number of young people aged between 18 and 35.
