Description

45 years of evolution of the field of Industrial Design
Wim Poelman started his studies in Technical and Industrial Design in 1967 at Delft University of Technology. This sentence already gives a good indication of how things have changed. The programme is now called "Industrial Design Engineering" and the institution is now called "Delft University of Technology". At the time, Wim Poelman did not have to pay tuition fees, although that was at the last minute.
Names have remained the same since then, but that is the only thing that has not changed. The field of Industrial Design has gone through an evolution in which four steps can be distinguished, each of which will be explained by Wim Poelman.
Step 1: The step from design to integral design
Step 2: The step from production-centric to product-centric
Step 3: The step from product-centric to user-centric
Step 4: The step from user-centric to social and ecological sustainability-centric
Transverse to this is the evolution of the subdisciplines, which can be subdivided into: business administration of product development, design, ergonomics, design methods and techniques, user and user research. Each of these subdisciplines has undergone spectacular development.
Added to this: Designers have largely been supplanted by psychologists.
And finally: Products used to be physical things. Nowadays, they are mostly software and services.
Of course, not everyone will subscribe to this classification, and that is the intention. The idea is that we will have a nice discussion about what the field will look like in 10 years' time.
